Europe works in a motorhome in winter, but two things change. The services go off long before the parking closes, and the equipment on your vehicle stops being good advice and becomes law.
The water goes first, not the parking
The commune of Pont-de-l’Arn in the Tarn puts both facts on the same page. The aire is ouverte toute l’année, open all year, and l’eau est coupée en période de gel, the water is cut off during freezing periods. It takes up to 10 vehicles, with drinking water and grey and black water drains, just not in January (pontdelarn.fr, checked September 17, 2026).
That is physics, not a local quirk. A borne, the service column on a French aire, is pipework standing outside, and a full pipe that freezes splits. So fill where you know the water is running, not where you want to park for the night, and make the service stop a leg of its own in daylight.
Then the site closes
Where a Stellplatz or an aire publishes a season at all, it almost always opens in spring and closes in fall. Winter-only opening is the rare exception, and plenty of sites that publish no season still have one. Open the commune’s page before you commit to a 40 kilometer detour, and drive there with a second option picked.
Winter equipment: five countries, five rules
Germany has no date. Paragraph 2(3a) of the StVO lets you drive in black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost only if every wheel carries a tire meeting paragraph 36(4) of the StVZO, and that one requires the alpine symbol, the mountain pictogram with a snowflake under UNECE Regulation 117 (gesetze-im-internet.de, checked September 17, 2026). An M+S marking alone no longer proves anything, and the rule bites on a sharp April morning too.
Austria counts in dates and in tonnes. From 1 November to 15 April, a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes needs winter tires on all wheels when the road is snow covered, slushy or icy, with at least 4mm of tread on radials and 5mm on cross-ply. Above 3.5 tonnes the obligation runs the whole period regardless of the weather, on at least the wheels of one drive axle, at 5mm and 6mm. Chains on two driven wheels substitute only where snow or ice covers the road continuously (oesterreich.gv.at, checked September 17, 2026). Plated over 3.5 tonnes, that second sentence is the one that catches people out.
France does it commune by commune. Decree 2020-1264 sets the période hivernale from 1 November to 31 March of the following year. It applies where the prefects of 34 departments in the Alps, Massif central, Jura, Pyrenees and Vosges name the communes, and motorhomes are explicitly covered. You choose: carry removable anti-skid devices for at least two driven wheels, meaning chains or textile snow socks, or run winter tires on at least two wheels of each axle, which on a two axle van is all four. Only 3PMSF marked tires count as the equivalent of carrying the devices (legifrance.gouv.fr and service-public.gouv.fr, checked September 17, 2026). Chains in the rear locker are the cheap answer for a single pass.
Italy signposts it. The Polizia di Stato gives 15 November to 15 April for tires fitted, and says road operators set the local obligation, posted on signs at the roadside. A winter tire there means an M+S, MS, M-S or M&S marking; on anything else you need chains on board. Without either you get a fine and are told not to continue until you fix it (poliziadistato.it, checked September 17, 2026). The sign at the slip road is the rule for the road you are on.
Switzerland has no obligation and still has consequences. The federal roads office states plainly that no law requires winter tires, then recommends them, rule of thumb October to Easter. A vehicle may still only be driven in fully roadworthy, compliant condition, and an insurer can cut its payout after a crash (astra.admin.ch, checked September 17, 2026).
Gas goes faster than you expect
Run propane, not butane. Butane stops vaporizing reliably at temperatures near freezing, and the bottle in your locker is as cold overnight as the air outside. Do not assume you can exchange a home bottle abroad: systems and fittings are national, so work out where you refill before the border.
Where winter overnighting is realistic
Low down, in town, on tarmac. A Stellplatz beside a swimming pool or a station gets plowed and often has power. The grass pitch by the lake has a barrier across it in February. The higher you go, the more the access road decides it rather than the site.
Winter changes nothing about the rules: wild camping does not become legal because nobody else is around. What changes is your margin. The sign at the entrance and the commune’s current word beat anything published online, this site included, and a closure can arrive week to week. Which season is worth the trip is on when to go, the rest of what belongs on board is on driving rules.
