Officially designated stopovers by country

As of August 27, 2026, FreeCampMaps lists 4,671 officially designated camping and motorhome stopovers in 5 European countries. France has the most, with 2,966.

What it means on the road

Every stopover counted here was set aside by a named public body: a commune, a Gemeinde, a comune, a municipality or a state agency. That is what separates it from a wild camping spot, and it is why you can expect a quiet night if you follow the sign at the entrance.

How this is counted

  • Counted: every place record on FreeCampMaps, 4,671 in all, each traced to the body that designated it and to its source record. Aires, Stellplätze, sostas, municipal stopovers, Danish shelters and tent sites all count.
  • Not counted: wild camping, which is never pinned on the map and is covered by the rules pages instead.
  • A stopover counts whether or not it is free. The CSV splits each country by fee, and "fee not stated" means the source gives no price, not that the place is free.
  • Records from different sources are never merged, so a stopover listed by two sources is counted once for each.
