03 · The write-up
What it is like to arrive here.
A valley-floor stopover in the Tarentaise that stays open all year, which is not something you can say about most of the free layer in the Savoie. Savoie Mont Blanc, the tourism agency for the Savoie and the Haute-Savoie, lists it as a camper van service and reception area on the Place de la gare at Notre-Dame-de-Briançon, in the commune of La Léchère.
The listing names the office de tourisme de Valmorel et des Vallées d’Aigueblanche as the contact, which is the official body behind it.
What is actually here
The equipment list is a public WC, a camper van service area, parking, a water supply, grey water emptying, black water emptying and a shower. Opening is stated as all year round.
Toilets, showers and a waste disposal point. No electrical hook-up in any version of the listing, so run on your own power. Savoie Mont Blanc does name a water supply, so a fill should be possible.
Services start at 0.50 euros and the listing says payment is cash, so carry coins. The official page prices the services and not the parking, so if a free night is load-bearing for your plan, call the tourist office number on the listing first.
Where it sits
Notre-Dame-de-Briançon is on the floor of the Tarentaise, the valley that runs up from Albertville toward Moûtiers and the big Savoie ski resorts. It is part of the commune of La Léchère. The aire is by the station square.
The valley floor is the reason this is a practical stop for a long vehicle. The Tarentaise road is a main route and takes a motorhome without difficulty. The resort roads climbing out of it do not, in the same way: switchbacks, gradient, and width limits that are easy to underestimate from a map. Check what your vehicle can do before you turn uphill, and plan alpine days by climb and by time rather than by distance.
Altitude and season
The listing says all year round, and being on the valley floor is what makes that credible. Aires higher up the same valley close, shut their water off, or sit behind a road that is not cleared.
Two seasonal cautions still apply. First, a Savoie valley in midwinter is cold enough to take a service borne out of use regardless of what the opening period says, so treat the water as something to confirm rather than assume. Second, if your route continues over a col rather than along the valley, check the current status with the département road service before committing a long vehicle to it. High passes shut, the reopening dates move with the snow, and the signed diversion around a closed col is routinely hours rather than minutes.
The rule that applies
The commune of La Léchère sets the local rules for the aire, and the listing publishes no maximum stay. Read the sign at the entrance before you plan a second or third night. Our French bivouac rules page covers the national position on sleeping in a vehicle, and what an aire actually is explains the category. The posted sign at the entrance is the current rule and wins over both.
Before you rely on this
Open the Savoie Mont Blanc listing linked below, and call the tourist office number on it if the tariff matters, because the official page prices the services and not the parking. In the Alps that is a distinction worth 60 seconds on the phone.
