Free shelters in Denmark

As of July 20, 2026, FreeCampMaps lists 759 shelters (shelterpladser) in Denmark. 425 must be booked in advance, 302 are first come, first served, and 32 do not say. All of them are free to use.

What it means on the road

A shelter is a simple open-fronted hut for sleeping in, run by Naturstyrelsen (the Danish Nature Agency) or a kommune. Check whether the one you want takes bookings before you set off: a bookable shelter can be taken on the night, and bookings go through book.naturstyrelsen.dk.

Shelters are for people arriving on foot, by bike or by canoe. You park where the site says and walk in. They are not motorhome stopovers.

How this is counted

  • Counted: the 759 places in Denmark on FreeCampMaps recorded as shelters, from GeoFA (udinaturen.dk). Tent sites (teltpladser) and other Danish campsites are not counted here.
  • Booking comes from the source record. "Do not say" means the record gives no answer either way, so check the listing before you count on a walk-up.

Sources and licenses

Each record keeps its own source and license, and every place page links to the record it came from.
