Tvis Å Kanoplads is a free kanolejrplads, a canoe camp, on the Tvis Å south of Holstebro in western Jylland. Holstebro Kommune runs it, and the kommune’s own booking page answers the price question directly: payment, betaling, is recorded as no.

The kommune calls the site Kanolejrplads Tvis Kloster. OpenStreetMap has it as Tvis Å Kanoplads. Same place, and the Danish name tells you what it is for: the river, not the road.

What the kommune’s page confirms

Holstebro Kommune lists the facilities as tent space, shelters, fire pits, drinking water, a boat landing, parking, a rest area, toilets, and firewood. It records the site as free to use. The page is in Danish, so translate it yourself if a detail is going to decide your night.

The shelters here are not first come first served. You book them through the kommune’s own login system, in Danish, before you arrive, so do not paddle in expecting to take one. What is here

Drinking water and toilets are tagged as present in the OpenStreetMap record and both appear in the kommune’s facility list, which is a rare case of the two sources agreeing. Treat that as a good sign rather than a guarantee: Danish primitive sites routinely turn the water off over winter.

Showers, an electric hook-up and a chemical waste point are not listed either way. Plan on doing without all three.

Where it sits

Inland northwest Jylland, roughly 25 km from the North Sea as the crow flies but a completely different environment from the coast. This belt around Holstebro, Vinderup and Ulfborg is plantation forest and farmland, and the plantations do real work: they take the edge off the westerly that makes an exposed dune pitch on the Ringkøbing Fjord coast so unpleasant in bad weather. If the forecast has ruined the coast, the inland sites are the answer.

The Tvis Å is a tributary that feeds into the Storåen, the river system that runs down through Holstebro and out to Nissum Fjord. That is the paddling context for this site and for the string of similar canoe stops along the same water. They are spaced for a day’s paddle, which is why they sit where they sit and why the road access to some of them is an afterthought.

Holstebro itself is a few minutes north and is a full-service town, so resupply is not a problem in this part of the region.

The rule that applies

Denmark does not have a Swedish-style right to roam. Sweden’s allemansrätten is a general right of access that applies regardless of who owns the land. Denmark has no equivalent. What you get instead is exactly what you are looking at here: a named landowner, in this case a kommune, publishing permission for a named site with conditions attached.

Open the kommune’s page linked below and confirm the free status and the facilities still read the way we describe. Municipal sites get closed for forestry work, for maintenance, and for the season, and the kommune has no reason to tell us.

If you are traveling in a vehicle, check what the parking area actually permits before you plan a night here. This is a canoe camp. It is not a motorhome stopover, and nothing on the kommune’s page says it is one.
