Free camping in North Denmark Region

North Denmark Region is the top of Jylland: the Limfjord across the middle, the Thy coast facing the North Sea, and the long taper up to Skagen where the Skagerrak meets the Kattegat. It is exposed on both sides, and the season here is shorter than anywhere else in the country.

What is mapped here

149 free shelters and tent sites are mapped across North Denmark Region, the smallest count of the Danish regions. 117 are shelterpladser, a shelter being a three-sided timber hut you sleep in, and 32 are teltpladser, tent sites. Treat it as a floor rather than a total: a blank part of the map is unmapped rather than empty, and up here the next one can be a long way on. Where this comes from

Naturstyrelsen runs most of them through its Vendsyssel, Thy and Himmerland units, with Aalborg Kommune the largest municipal operator.

This is the easiest Danish region to travel without planning. Only 38 of the 149 need booking and 99 take walk-ups, where in Central Denmark the ratio runs the other way. That does not make it a region to arrive in at dusk without a plan, because the gaps between sites are longer here than anywhere else in the country.

Amenities follow the usual Danish pattern: water recorded at some, explicitly absent at others, and showers at two of the older harbor points, Haverslev Havn and Stinesminde Havn. Recorded is not the same as working today, so carry water.

Where the free places sit

The Limfjord carries the largest share. Around the bridge crossings and the fjord shore you get Aggersund Broen, Haverslev Havn, Gjøl Bjerg, Halkær Voldsted and Egholm, the last of these on the small island off Aalborg. On the southern shore, Stinesminde Havn sits on the Mariager Fjord side.

The Thy coast, on the North Sea side of the Limfjord, is the exposed western edge: Stenbjerg Shelterplads, Hvidbjerg, Lodbjerg Fyr and the site by Sundby Strandbad. This is dune and plantation country and the wind is the governing fact. An open pitch here in a westerly is not a good night, in any month.

Around Aalborg there is a small cluster including Hesteskoen, Skiveren and Nørkærsvej at Storvorde, plus Birkelse to the northwest.

North of Aalborg the coverage thins fast. Geotopen near Sæby, Elling Plantage inland of Frederikshavn and Østerklit south of Skagen are the northern end of what is mapped. Skagen and the beaches on either side of the point are busy in summer and thinly mapped, so book a night up there rather than counting on finding a free one.

Season

This region has the shortest usable window in Denmark. Late June to mid August is when everything is open and busy, and July is the crunch. Aalborg, the Limfjord and the Skagen end fill in those weeks.

Either side of that, expect facilities to be the limit rather than access. Water and toilets at primitive Danish sites are commonly shut off for winter, and showers where they exist are usually a summer harbor arrangement. What is recorded is not what is switched on the day you arrive, so travel self-sufficient outside the summer. Where nothing is recorded, do not read it as nothing there, and do not count on it either.

Wind is not seasonal here. Both coasts are open, the North Sea side has nothing between it and the weather, and an exposed pitch is exposed in July. Plan the overnight around shelter from the wind, not around the temperature.
