Three bays, free, in the middle of a village in the Monts de la Madeleine, and the water is turned off for five months of the year. Roannais Tourisme publishes all of that, including the dates.

The listing is from the office de tourisme for the Roannais, and it states the tariff as “Gratuit” and the capacity as three motorhome places. Three is small enough that it should shape your plan rather than be a footnote in it.

What is actually here

Public toilets, water connections, a grey water drain and a picnic area, according to the tourist office. There are toilets and a waste disposal point. No showers and no electrical hook-up, so run on your own batteries.

Roannais Tourisme lists “branchements d’eau”, water connections, among the equipment. Take the tourist office at its word, but arrive with enough in the tank that a dead tap is an inconvenience rather than a problem.

There is also a boules pitch and a picnic area on site, which the office lists, and the aire is described as being in the village center.

Where it sits

Arcon is in the Loire département, in the Monts de la Madeleine, which is the range of low wooded mountains between the Roannais and the Allier. The tourist office describes the aire as in the heart of the Monts de la Madeleine and five minutes from the Domaine des Grands Murcins, a forest and arboretum site.

This is not alpine driving. It is upland forest country on ordinary departmental roads, reachable in a long vehicle without drama, and the sort of place that is useful precisely because the traffic goes past it on the valley roads instead. The nearest large town is Roanne.

Altitude and season

The aire is listed as open every day from January 1 to December 31, so the parking itself does not shut. What shuts is the water: the listing says “Mise hors gel du 1er novembre au 31 mars”, meaning the service point is put into frost protection from November 1 to March 31.

Those are five months when the bays are open and the tap is not. It is the single most useful fact on the page and it is exactly the pattern to expect anywhere with altitude in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Arrive with a full fresh tank and empty waste tanks between November and April, and plan the service stop somewhere lower.
