03 · La description

Ce que c'est que d'arriver ici.

Free every day except Thursday. The tourist office for Cluses puts it exactly that way: “stationnement autorisé gratuitement, sauf le jeudi jour de marché”. Turn up on market day and the bays are not yours.

That is the sort of local condition that never makes it into a motorhome app, and it is the reason we read the official page rather than the aggregator. Three places, in the car park near the church on Rue Joseph Depoisier, open all year.

What is actually here

A Flot Bleu service borne with drinking water, a cassette drain and a grey water drain, public toilets and what the listing calls a stable surface.

There are toilets and a waste disposal point. No showers and no electrical hook-up, so run on your own power. The tourist office names drinking water at the borne, so a fill should be possible, with one live caveat below.

One live caveat: when we checked, the listing carried a notice in capitals that the borne was under maintenance. That may have been cleared by the time you read this, and it may not. Check before you plan a tank fill here.

Where it sits

Cluses is in the Haute-Savoie, on the floor of the Arve valley, which is the main road corridor from Geneva up toward Chamonix and the Mont Blanc tunnel. This is a working industrial town, historically the center of French precision machining, not a resort. The aire is in town, near the church.

Being on the valley floor is the practical point. The Arve valley road is a normal main route that takes a long vehicle without difficulty, and Cluses sits on it. The villages and ski areas on the slopes above are a completely different driving proposition: narrow, steep and tight, and the place to discover you have misjudged an overhang. Check width and height limits before you turn off the valley.

Altitude and season

Cluses is a valley town, so this aire does not have the seasonal problem that the resort aires above it do. The listing says open all year, and the road to it is a main valley road that stays open.

That makes it genuinely useful in winter, when a lot of the free layer in the Alps is shut. Two things still apply. First, alpine valley towns get hard frost and a borne can be taken out of service by it. Second, if you are heading up to Chamonix or through the Mont Blanc tunnel, the tunnel prices by vehicle class and you want a quote for your own length and height from the operator before you commit to that route.

The rule that applies

The Thursday market rule is the commune’s, and it is the kind of thing enforced by a sign and a tow truck rather than by goodwill. The wider legal position is on our French bivouac rules page, and what an aire actually is covers the category. The posted sign at the entrance is the current rule and beats anything here.

Before you rely on this

Open the tourist office listing linked below. It carries the market day exception, the borne status and the opening period, and with three bays in a town center the real question of whether there is space is one you can only answer by arriving.
