03 · La description

Ce que c'est que d'arriver ici.

A free municipal aire de services with 20 places, which makes it one of the larger free stopovers in the Forez. The Loire Forez tourist office states the tariff in one word, “Gratuit”, and adds that the taxe de séjour is not included.

It calls the site an aire de services municipale, opposite the gendarmerie, a short distance from the center of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château and its shops, so you can restock on foot. It is the commune’s own facility, listed by the official tourist office, and that listing is where a change of terms appears first.

What is actually here

The listing names a waste water drain, a drinking water draw point, bins and recycling, and drains for grey and black water.

There are toilets and a waste disposal point. No showers, and no electrical hook-up in any version of the listing, so plan to run on your own power. The tourist office does name a drinking water draw point, so a fill should be possible outside the freezing months.

Twenty places is genuinely useful. It means this is one of the few free aires in the region where turning up without a backup plan is a reasonable risk.

Where it sits

Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is in the Loire département, in the Forez uplands south of Saint-Étienne, and carries the Village de Caractère label. The aire is on the Boulevard du Haut-Forez, on the old station quay near the filling station.

The Forez is one of the three or four places in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes where free communal aires cluster. It is hill country rather than mountain, on ordinary departmental roads, and it makes a much easier touring base in a long vehicle than anywhere east of the Rhône. Being near the filling station and opposite the gendarmerie also tells you what kind of location this is: a practical edge-of- town spot, not a scenic one.

Altitude and season

The tourist office says open all year, every day, and then adds the qualifier that matters at this altitude: “Hors période de gel”, outside freezing periods.

That is the standard Forez arrangement. The bays stay open, and the water and drains are taken out of service when the temperature drops far enough to threaten the pipework. No dates are published, because it depends on the winter. If you are here between roughly November and March, assume the service point may be off and carry what you need.

The rule that applies

The commune sets the local rules, including any overnight limit, which the listing does not publish. Read the sign at the entrance before you plan a second night. The taxe de séjour note is worth reading as written: the parking is free, the tourist tax is a separate matter. The national position on sleeping in a vehicle in France is on our French bivouac rules page, and what an aire actually is explains the category. The posted sign at the entrance beats all of it.

Before you rely on this

Open the Loire Forez Tourisme listing linked below before you go. The freeze qualifier is the live variable here, and no website can tell you what the temperature did last night.
