Free camping in Hesse

Hesse has 46 Stellplätze written up in full and on the map, and they are almost all in the forested uplands: the Werra-Meissner hills, the Vogelsberg, the Spessart and the Odenwald. Around Frankfurt and in the spa towns, the free stopovers thin out.

What to expect in Hesse

What you are arriving at

What the sign says

In Hesse a stopover here means a Stellplatz, a motorhome stopover designated by the Gemeinde or a local operator. Usually marked bays with a service point, signed from the road.

Fees

37 of 46 are free.

  • 37 free
  • 9 free to park, services charged

Free parking and free services are two different things. Where a place charges for water or power, its own page says so. Carry coins for the ones with no price posted.

Season

Check before you drive

4 of these 46 stopovers publish opening hours. The rest do not. Where no season is published, treat the water as something to confirm rather than something to plan around, and arrive with a full tank in the cold months.

04 · The detail

Free camping in Hesse, explained

Hesse is the state most people drive through on the way to somewhere else. The A5 and the A7 cross it, Frankfurt airport sits in the middle of it, and the motorhome traffic is mostly headed south.

Which is the argument for stopping. The parts of Hesse mapped here are quiet, forested and hilly: the Werra-Meissner country on the Thuringian border, the Kellerwald and Waldeck in the northwest, the Vogelsberg and the Wetterau in the center, the Spessart along the Kinzig, and the Odenwald and Bergstraße in the south. The sites are small, in the 3 to 8 pitch range, and typically at a village hall, a Festplatz or a swimming pool.

If Stellplatz is a new word, the Germany country page explains it and why it promises much less than a French aire.

Free, cheap, and the difference

Dillenburg in the Lahn-Dill hills is the straightforwardly free one. Eight pitches at the Aquarena sports park, signposted from the Bundesstraße, fee stated as none, fresh water 1 euro, electricity 1 euro for 8 hours, disposal free.

Gelnhausen on the Kinzig is the correction. It is labeled free on the map. The town’s own page publishes 5 pitches, no reservations, a daily parking ticket at 2.50 euros from the Parkscheinautomat, water at 1 euro per 10 liters, and electricity at 1 euro per 2 kilowatts with the payment unlocking the socket for 24 hours. Gray water goes into one of two channels or a direct column. That is inexpensive. It is not free, so bring the 2.50 euros.

Echzell in the Wetterau sits in between. It publishes the prices, roughly 40 liters of fresh water for 50 cents and electricity at 50 cents per kilowatt from electronic coin meters, plus a hose disposal opening and a cassette flap, and says nothing at all about a pitch fee, a capacity or a season. Turn up with coins and read the board, and do not take the silence as free.

Hofgeismar in the north publishes free year-round parking with no registration required, and gives no further detail. Same approach applies.

The Grandenborn arrangement

The Gemeinde Ringgau publishes the clearest version of the German split between standing and servicing anywhere in Hesse, and it is worth reading before you rely on it.

Up to 20 motorhomes may park at the Festplatz at Grandenborn at once. Parking alone costs nothing, with donations welcome. Use of the water, the electricity and the toilets is a flat 7 euros per day. The maximum stay is 10 overnight stops, which is unusually long. The site is open year-round, users take their own trash away, and the Gemeinde states directly that there is no winter clearing service.

That last line is the useful one. It tells you what the town will and will not do in January, in writing, which is more than most publish.

Seasonality

Water first, access second. The winter mechanism is the one described on the country page: standing water in an exposed pipe freezes and splits it, so supply and disposal columns get drained over the cold months. The parking generally stays open. Assume in winter that a Hesse Stellplatz is a place to park and nothing more.

Height matters more than the date. The Vogelsberg, the Rhön edge, the Kellerwald and the higher Werra-Meissner ground carry snow that the Rhine and Main valleys do not. Ringgau’s no-winter-clearing note is the version of this you can actually cite. A hilltop Festplatz that is fine in October can be a poor idea in January, and nobody is going to plow it.

The Rhine and Main are the mild corner. If you are traveling in the cold half of the year and need the best odds on a working service point, the low ground in the south of the state is where to look, not the uplands.

Summer is festival season on the Festplatz. A large share of the Hesse sites are on a Festplatz or beside a village hall, which means they are on somebody’s event ground and the event wins. Check the town page for the weekend you are traveling, and have a second option for it.

Where no season is published, do not read it as open all year. Plan the winter service stop around a town you have confirmed rather than the nearest pin.

What is mapped here

110 free places are mapped across Hesse. Treat the count as a floor rather than a total: a blank part of the map is unmapped rather than empty. Where this comes from

46 of them have a full page here, each one linked to the operator’s own listing, which is the quickest way to confirm one before you drive to it. Hesse has the best-attributed set of any state here: 25 of the 46 name the Stadt or Gemeinde that runs them. Three to plan around:

  • Gelnhausen charges 2.50 euros a day. Bring the coins.
  • Hofgeismar’s town page describes a free town-center site and does not name the P2 Turnhagen pitch mapped here, so treat them as two different places until you can see the board.
  • Grünberg and Sinntal have no working official page, so nothing is published about their fee or limit. Read the board at the entrance.

Where free places cluster

  1. The Werra-Meissner hills. Ringgau at Grandenborn, Wehretal, Meissner, Sontra and Schenklengsfeld, on the Thuringian border. The densest group in our Hesse data and the most exposed to a cold winter.
  2. North Hesse and Waldeck-Frankenberg. Hofgeismar, Immenhausen, Frankenberg, Rosenthal and Neustadt in Hesse, around the Kellerwald.
  3. The Vogelsberg and the Wetterau. Grünberg, Lich, Muschenheim and Echzell, in the farmed basin north of Frankfurt.
  4. The Spessart and the Kinzig valley. Gelnhausen, Steinau an der Straße and Sinntal, following the old road toward Bavaria.
  5. The Odenwald and the Bergstraße. Breuberg, Beerfelden, Groß-Umstadt and the sites at Reichelsheim and in the Weschnitz valley, in the wooded south.
  6. The Lahn-Dill and the Rhine. Dillenburg in the west, and the Rettbergsaue in the Rhine at Wiesbaden-Biebrich, which is a seasonal island site rather than a motorhome pitch.

Where to go next

The sign wins

The board at the entrance and the Gemeinde’s current guidance beat this page. Gelnhausen is mapped as free and is not. Read what is posted where you stop.

05 · Frequently asked

Camping in Hesse.

Are Hesse's free Stellplätze free?

It varies more than in most German states, and two towns show the range. Dillenburg publishes 8 pitches at the Aquarena with the fee stated as Keine, none, fresh water at 1 euro, electricity at 1 euro for 8 hours and free disposal. Gelnhausen, which is labeled free on the map, publishes 5 pitches with a daily parking ticket of 2.50 euros from the machine, water at 1 euro per 10 liters and electricity at 1 euro per 2 kilowatts activated for 24 hours. Both are good sites. Only one of them is free, so open the town's own page before you count on a night costing nothing.

What is the arrangement at Grandenborn in the Ringgau?

It is the clearest published example of the German split between parking and services. The Gemeinde Ringgau allows up to 20 motorhomes at once. Parking alone is free with donations welcome. If you want the water, the electricity and the toilets, there is a flat 7 euros per day. Maximum stay is 10 overnight stops, it is open year-round, and the Gemeinde states plainly that no winter road clearing is carried out there.

Can I stop free in Frankfurt or the Bad towns?

Not from inside them. Nothing written up here sits in Frankfurt or Wiesbaden. The closest you get to the Rhein-Main belt is Rosbach vor der Höhe, about 9 km from Bad Homburg, and a Wetterau cluster at Echzell, Gambach and Ranstadt within 15 km of Bad Nauheim. The rest are in Ringgau, Sontra, Frankenberg, Grünberg, Lich, Gelnhausen, Steinau an der Straße, Dillenburg and towns of that size. Plan the city days from one of those and take the train or the bus in. The country page covers what the law allows away from a designated site.

Do these sites work in winter?

The parking usually does. The water usually does not, because municipalities drain exposed supply columns over the cold months so the pipes do not freeze and split. Ringgau's note that it does not run a winter clearing service is the other half of the problem: a Festplatz on a hill in the Werra-Meissner is not going to be plowed for you. The Rhine and Main valleys are the mildest ground in the state and the least affected.

How many free places does Hesse have?

46 are on the map, and every one has a full page with the operator's own listing linked, because the map only carries places we have written up. Treat that as a floor rather than a total: another 64 places here carry a free label in OpenStreetMap and have not been checked against their operator yet, so a blank part of the map is unwritten rather than empty. On the quieter upland routes keep a second option in mind for the night.
