03 · The write-up
What it is like to arrive here.
The pitch is free and the services are not. Le Puy-en-Velay Tourisme puts it in one line: “Emplacement gratuit, vidange et eau payantes”, with a token at 2.50 euros sold in village shops and at the tourist information office.
The office de tourisme for the Le Puy-en-Velay area publishes the aire, the address and the tariff, so that page is where a change shows up first. It sits on the Place de la Gare at the entrance to La Chaise-Dieu, on the D906 between Le Puy-en-Velay and Ambert.
What is actually here
A service borne for fresh water and grey water, on a token, and an electrical hook-up. There is no sanitary block, so use the village for toilets and showers. Water comes from the token borne and nothing else, so do not turn up expecting a free tap.
The token has to be bought before you need it, from a village shop or the tourist information office. That is normal in the Haute-Loire and it is the part people get caught by, because it means the service point is useless outside shop hours unless you already have a token in the van.
Neither the capacity nor an overnight limit is published, so read the sign at the entrance and treat this as a stop rather than a base.
Where it sits
La Chaise-Dieu is a small village on the high plateau of the Haute-Loire between the Livradois and the Velay, and it is known for its abbey. The aire is at the village entrance rather than deep inside it, which for a long vehicle is the right side of the village to be on.
The D906 through here is a normal two-lane road and carries traffic between Le Puy-en-Velay and Ambert. This is not the Alps and there is no pass to worry about, but you are on an exposed upland plateau rather than in a sheltered valley, and the weather behaves accordingly.
Altitude and season
This is the important line on the page. The tourist office publishes opening hours of April 1 to October 31, so this is a seasonal aire, not a year-round one. Do not plan a November or a March stop here on the assumption that a free aire is always open.
That season is typical of the high Haute-Loire plateau, where winter is long and communes shut service points rather than repair frozen pipework every spring. If you are traveling the shoulder months, check the dates on the listing for the current year rather than trusting ours.
The rule that applies
The commune sets local rules for its own aire, including any overnight limit, and the posted sign at the entrance is the version that counts. Our French bivouac rules page covers the national legal position, and what an aire actually is explains why a French aire is not a campsite and should not be treated as one.
Before you rely on this
Open the tourist office listing linked below before you go. The opening dates and the token price are both published there, and both are the kind of thing that changes each season.
