What it is like to arrive here.

Parking is free, the services are not, and the stay is capped at 24 hours. That is the whole deal at Neussargues, and Hautes Terres Tourisme states all three on its listing for the aire.

The word to notice is communale. This is a stopover the commune of Neussargues en Pinatelle set aside and runs, listed by the tourist office for the Hautes Terres du Cantal. It has five marked places for motorhomes, and the listing says it is open all year, every day.

What is actually here

Toilets, an electrical hook-up and a waste disposal point, plus picnic tables and a discovery trail according to the tourist office. No showers and no free drinking water, so fill the tank before you turn off the RN122.

The service point costs 2 euros. The tourist office also notes that the borne can be switched into frost-protection mode depending on the weather, which in practice means the water is off. When we last checked the listing it carried a note that the multi-service station was out of order, so treat the service point as something to confirm rather than something to plan a tank fill around.

Five places is small. If you are traveling in July or August, have somewhere else in mind.

Where it sits

Neussargues sits in the Cantal, in the volcanic heart of the old Auvergne, at the junction of the RN122 and the D679. That is a real crossroads rather than a back lane: the RN122 is the main road across the Cantal massif toward Aurillac, so this is a stopover on a through route.

The Cantal is high, open country, and this is a genuinely mountainous département even though it is nowhere near the Alps. Roads climb, weather turns quickly, and the passes over the massif are exposed. A motorhome is fine on the RN122 itself. The small roads off it are a different question and worth checking for width before you commit.

Altitude and season

The listing says open year round, every day, and the 24 hour limit applies throughout. What changes with the season is the water. The tourist office is explicit that the borne can be put into frost-protection mode when the weather demands it, so a winter or shoulder-season stop here may find the bays open and the tap dead. That is normal across upland Auvergne and it is the single most useful thing to know about mountain aires in this region. Fill up lower down.

No closure dates are published, so treat a working tap here in winter as a bonus rather than a plan.
