Free camping in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is the cheap half of France to travel in. It has no coast, so it never gets the August crush, and the small communes along the canals and through the Charolais keep aires that cost nothing to park on.

What to expect in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

What you are arriving at

What the sign says

In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté a stopover here means an aire de services, a stopover designated by the commune. Usually a small marked car park with a service point for water and waste, signed from the road.

Fees

49 of 220 are free.

  • 152 price not posted
  • 49 free
  • 16 paid
  • 3 free to park, services charged

Free parking and free services are two different things. Where a place charges for water or power, its own page says so. Carry coins for the ones with no price posted.

Season

Check before you drive

6 of these 220 stopovers publish opening hours. The rest do not. Where no season is published, treat the water as something to confirm rather than something to plan around, and arrive with a full tank in the cold months.

04 · The detail

Free camping in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, explained

This region is inland, and that is the whole point of it. There is no seafront to fill up, no ferry port feeding traffic in, and no August coastal squeeze. What there is instead is wine country in the west, the Canal de Bourgogne cutting across the middle, and the Jura climbing east until it hands over to Switzerland. Prices, crowding and pace all follow from that.

Distances are the catch. Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is two old regions welded together and it is big. Auxerre in the Yonne and Pontarlier on the Swiss border are at opposite corners of it, and nothing about the drive between them is quick on the free roads. Plan it as two or three trips, not one circuit.

Where the free places actually are

Four clusters carry most of it.

The southern Saône-et-Loire, the Charolais and Brionnais cattle country, is the densest. Saint-Christophe-en-Brionnais, Gibles, Semur-en-Brionnais, Génelard, Gueugnon and Paray-le-Monial all sit within an easy hour of each other, and most of those aires are small, 2 to 8 bays, attached to a village rather than a resort.

The Nièvre and the Loire canals run north from there: Fleury-sur-Loire, Guérigny, Pougues-les-Eaux, Chaumot, Saint-Honoré-les-Bains. Several of these are haltes nautiques, canal-side stopovers built for boats that also take motorhomes. They tend to have water and often showers, and several are seasonal because the navigation is.

The Côte-d’Or along the Canal de Bourgogne gives you the postcard version: Semur-en-Auxois, Sombernon, Rouvray, Nolay, Lamarche-sur-Saône. Semur-en-Auxois is the one to know. The commune lists around thirty spaces on Avenue Pasteur, free to park, about 15 minutes on foot from the medieval center, with metered water and electricity.

The Jura and Doubs uplands

The Jura and Doubs uplands are the outlier: Le Russey, Sancey-le-Long, Pont-de-Roide, Bellefontaine, Les Fourgs. These are high, cold, and genuinely different in winter from everything else in the region. At Les Fourgs, up on the plateau near the Swiss border, the aire d’accueil La Coupe is free to park on and runs its electricity on tokens you buy in local shops or at the mairie. That last detail matters more than the price: turn up on a Sunday and there is nobody to sell you one.

Seasonality

May, June and September are the best of it. The canals are open, the water points are on, and the aires are not busy.

July and August are busier than you might expect around Beaune, Vézelay and Cluny, because the wine and abbey circuits pull day traffic even though the region has no beaches. It is still nothing like the Atlantic coast in August. You will find a space.

Winter is the honest problem. Two things happen. Canal-side and lakeside aires often close outright once the navigation season ends, some of them explicitly flagged as May to September. And inland communes shut off water points before the frost, which means an aire can be open, free, and useless for filling up. The Jura adds snow on top: the plateau roads above 900 m are winter roads, and an aire at that altitude may be under a plow bank rather than closed on paper.

Assume nothing about water between November and March. Fill up in a town before you commit to a night somewhere small.

What is mapped here

179 free places are mapped across Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Treat the count as a floor rather than a total: a blank part of the map is unmapped rather than empty, which matters most on the long drives between the Yonne and the Jura, so keep a second option in mind on those legs. 05 · Frequently asked

Camping in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

Is Bourgogne-Franche-Comté a good region to travel free in?

Yes, if you are happy inland. It is a large region with a lot of small communes and no coastal pressure, so free aires are common and rarely full outside July and August. The trade-off is distance: the Jura and the Yonne are about four hours apart, so treat it as several trips rather than one loop.

Do free aires here really cost nothing?

Parking is usually free. Water and electricity are usually not. Semur-en-Auxois publishes 2 euros for 6 minutes of water and 3 euros for 6 hours of electricity, bank card only, on free parking (source below, checked 2026-07-20). Les Fourgs runs its hookups on tokens sold in local shops and at the mairie. Carry small change and a card, and expect the machine to want one or the other and not both.

Can I use the Jura aires in winter?

Some stay open and some do not, and the water is the first thing to go. Communes shut water points off before the first hard frost to stop the pipework splitting, so an aire can be open, free and completely dry in January. Fill up in a town before you commit to a night in a small one, and check the commune's own page for a stated closing date.

What about sleeping outside an aire?

That is bivouac, and it runs on its own rules rather than on the aire network. Read the France bivouac rules page before you count on anything, and wherever you end up, the posted sign is the last word.
