Free camping in Occitania

Occitania, Occitanie on the road signs, stretches from the Spanish border and the Pyrenees across to the Rhône and down to the Mediterranean. The mapped free stopovers are overwhelmingly rural and inland: the Aveyron, the Gers, the Lot and the Lozère, not the beaches.

What to expect in Occitania

What you are arriving at

What the sign says

In Occitania a stopover here means an aire de services, a stopover designated by the commune. Usually a small marked car park with a service point for water and waste, signed from the road.

Fees

50 of 288 are free.

  • 186 price not posted
  • 50 free
  • 50 paid
  • 2 free to park, services charged

Free parking and free services are two different things. Where a place charges for water or power, its own page says so. Carry coins for the ones with no price posted.

Season

Check before you drive

3 of these 288 stopovers publish opening hours. The rest do not. Where no season is published, treat the water as something to confirm rather than something to plan around, and arrive with a full tank in the cold months.

04 · The detail

Free camping in Occitania, explained

Occitania is the width of a country. From Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse in the Aude to Mende in the Lozère is a serious drive, and the terrain changes completely along the way. Broadly there are four Occitanias for a driver: the Pyrenees and their foothills in the south, the Mediterranean plain in the east, the Toulouse basin and the Gers in the middle, and the high limestone country of the Aveyron, Lozère and Cévennes in the north east.

The driving

The middle is straightforward. The Gers and the Toulouse basin are rolling farmland with good, quiet departmental roads, and a motorhome is entirely at home. The Aveyron is hillier than it looks on a map, with steep-sided river valleys, but the roads are decent and the towns are well spaced.

The two ends are where you slow down. Pyrenean valley roads climb hard and narrow as they go, and the high cols are seasonal. The Cévennes and the Tarn gorges are spectacular and genuinely tight: the gorge roads have blind corners against rock on one side and a drop on the other, and meeting a coach in a 7 m van is not a good afternoon. Neither is impossible. Both need to be planned as half a day rather than an hour.

The Mediterranean plain drives fast, on the A9 and the roads either side of it, and is the busiest part of the region by a wide margin in summer.

Seasons

The Mediterranean coast is crushed in August, and the pressure runs a good way inland along the motorway corridor. If you have a choice, come in May, June, September or early October, when the weather is still good and the roads are not. Inland high country goes the other way: the Aubrac and the Lozère sit above 1,000 m in places and get proper winters, and aires up there tend to be seasonal.

Some places record their own dates. Ségur in the Aveyron is tagged in OpenStreetMap as April to October. Saint-Just-sur-Viaur is tagged as open around the clock except the third Saturday and Sunday of August, which is the kind of local detail that catches people out. Both are contributor records rather than official opening hours, so call the mairie or open the commune page before you build a day around either.

What is mapped here

221 free places are mapped across Occitania. Treat the count as a floor rather than a total: a blank part of the map is unmapped rather than empty. Where this comes from

There is more on the ground here than on the map, and you can find it yourself. The Aveyron, Gers, Aude, Lot and Gard tourism boards each publish their own aire listings, so check the département you are crossing before you commit to a route through it.

Where the free places cluster

The Aveyron is the center of gravity. Laissac, Boisse-Penchot, Monteils, Rieupeyroux, Marcillac-Vallon, Cransac, Pradinas, Belmont-sur-Rance, Ségur, Saint-Just-sur-Viaur, Saint-Côme d’Olt and Saint-Cyprien-sur-Dourdou all appear with an official lead behind them. They are mostly small, 3 to 15 bays, and close enough together that you can plan a week without ever driving more than an hour between stops.

The Gers is the second cluster and has a different character: bastide towns and Armagnac country, with aires at Fleurance, Marciac, Mauvezin, Saint-Clar and Labatut. Two of these are large by French standards. OpenStreetMap records 40 bays at Fleurance and 42 at Marciac, which is several times the size of a typical village aire.

North east of that, the Lozère and the southern Massif carry a scattered set: Mende, Langogne, Lanuéjols, Thérondels and the Aubrac farm aires. High, cool, and quiet outside July and August.

The rest is thinner and more scattered. The Lot has Mauroux and Cardaillac, the Tarn-et-Garonne has Lauzerte and Grisolles, the Gard has Arre and Saint-Laurent-de-Carnols, the Haute-Garonne has Venerque and La Magdelaine-sur-Tarn. In the Pyrenean south there are singles worth knowing if you are already up there: the Arize valley in the Ariège, the aire at the Ax 3 Domaines station above Ax-les-Thermes, and Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse under the Cathar castle in the Aude.

Before you rely on any of this

The posted sign and the mairie beat this website. That is especially true in the popular parts of this region, where arrangements change between seasons and a car park that was free last year may now be barriered or metered. If you are in a tent rather than a vehicle, an aire is not the right target and the rules differ: start with the French bivouac rules.

For the national picture see the France country page, for the word itself see what an aire is, and to compare this region with the rest of the country open the France map.

05 · Frequently asked

Camping in Occitania.

Are there free aires on the Mediterranean coast?

Essentially none. The free places in Occitania sit inland, and the Languedoc and Roussillon beach communes barely appear. Plan on paying near the water and driving inland for the free nights. Each coastal commune sets its own rule, so wherever you do stop, the sign at the entrance is the one that counts.

Which part of Occitania has the most free stopovers?

The Aveyron, by a distance. More of the region's confirmed free aires sit there than in any other département: Laissac, Rieupeyroux, Marcillac-Vallon, Cransac, Pradinas, Ségur, Belmont, Saint-Côme d'Olt and more. It is farming country with a lot of small municipal aires, and the towns are close enough together to hop between.

Can I get over the Pyrenees in a motorhome?

On the main crossings, yes, in season. The high cols close in winter and reopen when the snow lets them, which is not a fixed date, and the mountain roads are steep, narrow in places and slow. Check the current status of any col with the département road service before you commit a long vehicle to it, rather than assuming a route that worked in September still works in March.

How hot does it get inland in summer?

Hot enough to matter. The Toulouse basin, the Tarn and the Gard regularly run well above coastal temperatures in July and August, and a motorhome on an unshaded gravel aire is an oven by mid afternoon. The Aubrac, the Lozère and the Cévennes sit high enough to be cooler, which is a good reason to go up rather than down in high summer.
