Free camping in Pays de la Loire

Pays de la Loire is two regions pretending to be one. There is the Atlantic edge, running from the Vendée beaches north past Saint-Nazaire to the Loire estuary, and there is everything behind it: Anjou vineyards, the Sarthe, and a lot of flat green bocage that nobody visits. How you feel about this region depends almost entirely on which half you are in and what month it is.

The coast is the draw and the problem. Les Sables-d’Olonne, Noirmoutier, Saint-Jean-de-Monts and the Pornic stretch are mainstream French family holiday territory, which means the pressure here is domestic and it is concentrated into July and August.

Where the free places actually are

The Vendée coast and the marsh behind it. Beauvoir-sur-Mer and Saint-Gervais sit on the marsh opposite Noirmoutier. These are the ones under real seasonal pressure.

The Pornic and Saint-Nazaire strip at the top of the coast: Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef, La Salorge, the Jaunais aire at Saint-Nazaire. Useful if you are coming off the estuary or heading for Brittany.

Inland Vendée, which is where the space is: Chantonnay, Mareuil-sur-Lay, Moutiers-sur-le-Lay, Le Poiré-sur-Vie, La Châtaigneraie, Pouzauges, La Meilleraie-Tillay. Small commune aires, mostly free, mostly not full, and around half an hour to an hour from a beach.

Anjou, the Loire and Layon vineyards around Angers and Saumur: Concourson-sur-Layon, Chanzeaux, Saint-Georges-sur-Loire, Villevêque, Le Guédeniau. Saint-Georges-sur-Loire publishes 15 spaces, free parking for 72 hours, free water and waste, with the water shut off in freezing weather.

The Sarthe and the Mayenne in the north: Le Mans, Ruillé-en-Champagne, Asnières-sur-Vègre, Saint-Georges-du-Rosay. This is the quietest quarter and the obvious corridor if you are driving down from the Channel ports.

Note the pattern: the free places cluster inland, and the coast is where the charging and the restrictions are. That is not an accident. Coastal communes have more demand than parking, so they meter it.

Seasonality

June and September are the answer. The water is usable, the coastal aires have space, and a lot of seasonal facilities are running. This is the single most useful thing on this page.

July and August are the crush. Treat coastal free aires as unavailable rather than as a plan that might work, and put your money into a campsite for the nights you actually want to be on the beach. Inland stays workable throughout.

Winter is mild here compared to inland France, and the coast rarely freezes hard, but two things still bite. Seasonal aires close: some here run May to October only, and the coastal towns shut down comprehensively out of season. And water points get shut off ahead of frost even where the aire stays open. Saint-Georges-sur-Loire says so on its own page. Others do it without saying so.

Shoulder season here is genuinely, measurably better, and it is not close.
