Klostermølle Teltplads is a free teltplads, a tent site, on the Gudenå canoe route in the middle of Jylland. It is not an aire and it is not a harbor stopover. It is a pitch for people arriving on the water or on foot.

Say the unhelpful part first, because it decides whether this page is any use to you. The OpenStreetMap record tags this site as closed to caravans and to motorized vehicles. If you are driving a motorhome, this is not a place you can sleep. If you are in a canoe or on a bike, it is an officially listed, genuinely free overnight and a good one.

What the official listing says

VisitDenmark, Denmark’s national tourism organization, carries the listing, and the entry is maintained by Destination Kystlandet, the destination company for this stretch of eastern Jylland. The page is in Danish, so run it through a translator on your phone if a detail is going to decide your night.

Two things it states plainly. Staying overnight is free. And the limit is two nights: “Det er gratis at overnatte på pladsen. Dog højest to overnatninger.” That two-night ceiling is normal for Danish primitive sites and it is not a suggestion.

What is here

Drinking water and toilets are both listed. Danish water points at primitive sites are commonly shut off through winter to stop the pipes freezing, so carry enough water to be wrong outside high summer.

Showers, an electric hook-up and a waste disposal point are not listed either way. Assume none of the three and you will not be disappointed.

Where it sits

This is the Søhøjlandet, the lake and river country between Silkeborg, Ry and Skanderborg, and it is the closest thing Denmark has to hill scenery. The Gudenå is the country’s longest river and it threads through this whole system of connected lakes, which is why the canoe routes and the tent sites along them exist in the first place.

Understand what that means for the weather and the feel of the place. This is inland Denmark, sheltered by forest and by land on every side. It is a different proposition from the North Sea dune coast an hour and a half west, where an open pitch is at the mercy of a westerly and the wind is the thing you plan around. Here the constraints are insects near still water in high summer, and a short season: late June to mid August is when everything is open and when everything is busy.

Distances in this part of Jylland are small. If the site is full or does not suit, you have not lost much of a day getting somewhere else.

The rule that applies

Denmark does not have a Swedish-style right to roam. This is the single most common mistake English-speaking travelers make in the Nordics, and it is worth being blunt about. Allemansrätten is a general Swedish right of access that does not depend on who owns the ground. Denmark has nothing equivalent. What Denmark has is landowners, including the state and the kommuner, giving specific permissions on specific plots, published with specific conditions attached.

The posted sign at the site and the current guidance from the body that runs it beat this website. Always.

Before you rely on this

Open the listing linked above and read the current Danish text before you commit. Two-night limits, seasonal closures for maintenance, and winter shutoffs of water and toilets are all normal here and nobody tells us when they change.

And check the access question again if you are in a vehicle. The record says tents only. A page on the internet is not a barrier, but a barrier is a barrier.
