Free, and one night only. Drôme Tourisme states the tariff as “Emplacement : Gratuit, 1 nuit maximum”, which makes this a staging stop and not a base.

The tourist board for the Drôme publishes the aire, its three motorhome places and its opening period, so those are the numbers to plan around. It sits between the public garden and the tennis courts, a short distance from the center of Lus-la-Croix-Haute.

What is actually here

Drôme Tourisme describes flat tarmac with no shade, easy access from the bypass heading toward la Jarjatte, drains for grey and black water, drinking water and public toilets, and states plainly that there is no electricity.

There are toilets and a waste disposal point. No showers, and no electricity, which the listing states plainly, so arrive with the batteries charged. The listing does name “eau potable”, drinking water, so a fill should be possible in season.

Capacity is three or four places depending on which listing you read. Either way it is tiny, and in July or August you should have a second option in mind before you turn off the road.

Where it sits

Lus-la-Croix-Haute is in the far southeast of the Drôme, on the col road between the Diois and the Trièves, which is the corridor between the Vercors and the Dévoluy. It is mountain country rather than the lavender and vineyard Drôme most British visitors picture, and it feels much closer to the Alps than to Provence.

The aire is described as being between the public garden and the tennis courts, a few steps from the village center, with access off the bypass. That means you are not threading a long vehicle through a village core to reach it, which is worth something here.

Altitude and season

The listing gives an opening period of April 1 to November 1. That is a genuinely seasonal aire, and it is the pattern for this altitude band: the commune opens it once the frost risk passes and shuts it before winter rather than nursing a service point through it.

If you are crossing between the Drôme and the Hautes-Alpes in late autumn or early spring, do not assume this one is running. The valley roads stay open in normal winters, but a free aire at this height is a summer and shoulder-season proposition. Check the current year’s dates on the listing.

The rule that applies

One night is the commune’s rule as published by the tourist board, and a one night cap is enforced more often than a longer one.
