This is a parking area, not an aire de services, and the difference matters before you drive to it. The Office de tourisme du Val de Sioule states that motorhome parking is authorized along the Bouble at the Pont des Eaux Salées on the route de Saint-Pourçain, in a parking area of two or three places, with free access.

The same listing names a second permitted spot in Chantelle, along the tennis court on rue de Bourgneuf. With two or three places by the river, that second address is the one to have written down.

What is actually here

Drinking water and toilets. No showers, no electrical hook-up and no waste disposal point.

Read that last one carefully, because it is the practical constraint. There is no drain here for grey water or a chemical toilet. This is a place to sleep and possibly fill up, not a place to service the van. Plan the emptying stop somewhere else and do not turn up with full tanks assuming you will find a solution.

The tourist office lists three motorhome places and the description says two or three. Either way this is one of the smallest stopovers in the region, so do not arrive late and hope.

Where it sits

Chantelle is in the Allier, in the Val de Sioule, in the northwestern and lowest-lying part of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The tourist office describes the village as a former châtellenie known for its Saint Vincent abbey, which dates from the late eleventh and early twelfth century and still houses a Benedictine community. It also notes the Anne de Beaujeu walk below the abbey, along the river in the Gorges de la Bouble, which is classified as an Espace Naturel Sensible.

The Allier is where the free layer in this region is thickest, and it is the easiest part of it to drive. Flat to rolling farmland, ordinary departmental roads, small towns close enough together that a full aire costs you twenty minutes rather than an evening.

Altitude and season

Altitude is not a factor here in the way it is in the Savoie or the Cantal. The Val de Sioule is low country, the roads do not close, and the listing gives opening hours covering the full calendar year, every day.

That makes this a legitimate winter option in a region where much of the free layer shuts down between November and April. There is no service borne here to be turned off, so there is nothing to winterize. Cold, yes. Closed, no.

The rule that applies

The commune decides where motorhomes may stop and for how long, and the tourist office listing publishes no overnight limit. Plan on one night and read the sign at the spot before you count on a second.
