Free camping in Rhineland-Palatinate

The wine-village Stellplatz is the thing this region is known for, and it is a genuinely good format: a dozen marked bays at the edge of a village, a service column, the Weinstube and the bakery a short walk away, and vineyards behind. It is common along the Mosel, the Middle Rhine, the Nahe and the Deutsche Weinstraße.

Most of them are not free, and that is the honest headline for this page. Filter for the free ones and the Mosel and the Rhine gorge almost disappear. What is left is inland: Rheinhessen around Worms, the Nordpfälzer Bergland below the Donnersberg, the Pfälzerwald, the Südliche Weinstraße, and the Westerwald and Lahn country up toward the Rhine at Koblenz.

What free looks like here

Kirchheimbolanden publishes the most complete picture of any site in our Rhineland-Palatinate set. The Herrngarten Wohnmobilübernachtungsplatz has 7 pitches, 2 of them 9 by 5 meters and 5 of them 7 by 5 meters. Use of the pitches and of the disposal station costs nothing. Fresh water is 1 euro per 100 liters. Electricity comes from two coin columns with four outlets each at 50 cents per kilowatt hour. Maximum stay is two days, the site is open year-round, and the town notes that space is limited during festival weekends in May, August and October and during its beer week, which runs every second year.

Osthofen in Rheinhessen is the roomiest. Ten pitches in a separate section and up to 50 on the Festplatz itself, free of charge, supply and disposal available, maximum standing time 48 hours, open year-round. The town’s own listing adds that there is partial construction noise as of December 2025, which is exactly the kind of thing worth knowing and exactly the kind of thing a map pin never tells you.

Waldfischbach-Burgalben’s Carentaner Platz sits in the Pfälzerwald nature park: 6 free pitches, a power connection and a supply and disposal facility, open year-round, next to a swimming pool and a playground. The Klingbachhalle site on the Südliche Weinstraße runs 8 free pitches year-round with water at 1 euro per 80 liters, electricity at 50 cents per kilowatt hour and disposal at 1 euro.

The one that is going away

Lambrecht, in the Pfälzerwald on the road up from Neustadt, publishes 7 free pitches with a coin-operated water and power station and a disposal station for guests. It also carries a notice on the same page saying the Stellplatz will shortly be permanently closed because of construction work.

It is here because it will not be. A pin can outlive the site it describes by years, and the Gemeinde page is where a closure shows up first. Open the town’s own page for anywhere you are routing an evening around, and have a second option for the Pfälzerwald leg.

Seasonality

Winter takes the water. The mechanism is on the country page: standing water in an exposed pipe freezes and splits it, so municipalities drain supply and disposal columns over the cold months. The parking usually stays open. Several sites here publish ganzjährig, year-round, including Osthofen, Kirchheimbolanden, the Carentaner Platz and the Klingbachhalle. That describes access, not a guarantee of running water in January.

The Rhine and Rheinhessen are the mild ground. This is some of the warmest country in Germany and the low valleys rarely freeze hard. The Eifel, the Westerwald and the higher Pfälzerwald and Hunsrück are a different matter, and they are the sites most likely to have a column shut off.

Wine season is the crowded season. Village festivals run through the warm half of the year and they are the reason a Festplatz stopover disappears for a weekend. Kirchheimbolanden publishes its pinch points. Most Gemeinden do not, so if you are traveling in September and October, look at the town page for the weekend you need.

Where no season is published, do not read it as open all year. Confirm the town before you plan a winter service stop around it, and fill up in the Rhine valley rather than in the Hunsrück.

It also undercounts the choice you actually have, because the region’s characteristic stopover, the wine-village Stellplatz, is usually a paid one. If you will pay, there is far more here than 71. 33 of them have a full page here, each linked to the operator’s own website, which is the quickest way to confirm one before you drive to it. Four to plan around:

• Lambrecht is scheduled to close permanently for construction work. Do not route an evening to it.
• Osthofen has a construction notice as of December 2025. Expect noise.
• Hachenburg and Ingelheim have no working official page, so nothing is published about their fee or their limit. Read the board at the entrance.

Where free places cluster

1. Rheinhessen. Osthofen north of Worms and Ingelheim on the Rhine. The flattest and mildest corner, and the closest the free places get to the Rhine itself.
2. The Nordpfälzer Bergland and the Donnersberg. Kirchheimbolanden, Albisheim and Schiersfeld. Small towns, published prices, short stay limits.
3. The Pfälzerwald. Lambrecht, Waldfischbach-Burgalben and Lemberg. Forest, sandstone and long walking routes, and the largest contiguous forest area in the region.
4. The Südliche Weinstraße. The Klingbachhalle site and the villages around it, at the eastern foot of the Pfälzerwald toward the Alsace border.
5. The Westerwald and the Lahn. Hachenburg, Nassau and Katzenelnbogen, in the hills north of the Rhine.
6. The Eifel. Thin. Manderscheid is about all there is, so plan a paid night if the Eifel is the point of the trip.
