Free camping in Centre-Val de Loire

Centre-Val de Loire is where France stops being hard work. The valley floor is flat, the départementales are wide and empty, and there is no toll motorway you need to take to get anywhere useful inside the region. If you have been putting off driving something long and slow on the continent, this is the place to find out whether you like it.

The châteaux are the reason most people come, and they are genuinely lined up along one road. Orléans, Blois, Amboise, Tours, Chinon: you can follow the river west and hit the famous ones without a map. The consequence is that the corridor itself is the busy part and everything a commune or two off it is not.

The cycling thing is the real story

La Loire à Vélo is a 900 km signed cycle route from Cuffy, near Nevers, to Saint-Brevin-les-Pins on the Atlantic. Centre-Val de Loire carries its middle section, and the region as a whole is one of the densest cycle-tourism corridors in France.

That matters to you for a practical reason. Communes here built stopovers aimed at riders: drinking water, toilets, somewhere to sleep, often somewhere to charge a battery. A lot of those facilities take motorhomes too, and the ones that were built as public infrastructure rather than as a business tend to be free. You will see aires listed as halte vélo, relai vélo or halte cycliste that also have marked motorhome bays. Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre, in the Indre, is the clean example of the type: the commune describes free access to waste disposal, water, electricity and wifi, open all year, 24 hours a day, on a public square.

Expect to share. If you park in one of these you are parked among cyclists, and the etiquette is the same as any aire: no awning, no chairs, no washing line.

Where the free places actually are

Five loose groups.

The Loire corridor itself, Meung-sur-Loire, Dry, Jouy-le-Potier and the Orléans approaches, is the busiest and the most useful for sightseeing.

Sologne, the flat forest and lake country south of the river, has Vernou-en-Sologne, Tour-en-Sologne and Aubigny-sur-Nère. Quiet, and close enough to Chambord to use as a base.

The Cher valley running east from Tours: Saint-Georges-sur-Cher, Mennetou-sur-Cher, Méry-sur-Cher, Langon, Villeloin-Coulangé. This is the underrated part of the region and the aires are small village ones.

The Indre and the Berry, well south of the châteaux: La Châtre, Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre, Ardentes, Neuillay-les-Bois, Martizay, Azay-le-Ferron, Culan, Le Châtelet. Emptiest quarter of the region, cheapest, least visited.

The Eure-et-Loir and the Perche in the north: Courville-sur-Eure, Nogent-le-Roi, Cloyes-sur-le-Loir, Authon-du-Perche. Handy if you have come south from Normandy or the Channel ports and want a first or last night that is not a motorway services.

Seasonality

April to June and September to October are the good windows, and here that is not a throwaway line. The châteaux are open, the aires are not full, and the cycle traffic has not peaked.

July and August are busy but survivable. This is not the Atlantic coast, and the crowding is concentrated: it is heavy at the famous châteaux and on the towpath route, and light two communes away. If you want Chambord in August, park somewhere else and ride or drive in.

Winter is quiet, cheap, and dry in the wrong sense. Many aires stay open and free. Their water points do not, because communes turn them off before frost. Château opening hours also thin out once the season ends, so check each one you plan a day around rather than assuming. Winter here is fine if you are self-sufficient on water for a few days at a time.
